Car Shipping Guide
A general guide to provide you with information before deciding on a shipping company. Included is: finding a reputable shipper, getting quotes, understanding the costs of shipping and more.
Find a Reputable Shipper - Check to see if the Better Business Bureau or state consumer protection agency has a record of complaints. Ask how long the company has been in business. Check with the FMSCA to determine if they have insurance.
Get Quotes - You'll want to get quotes from 4-6 companies in writing and determine whether it is a binding estimate or nonbinding. The lowest bid may not be the best choice if you have any special circumstances or needs.
Understand the Costs - Shipping charges are a combination of open or enclosed transport, vehicle type, delivery, distance and if the vehicle is operable. Check to see if your quote includes any extra charges. As a guide, a deposit (usually $200) maybe required prior to processing your order. The balance is to be paid at pick-up or delivery to the driver. Find out what methods of payment the transporter will accept: check, credit card, etc.
Shipping Times - Shipping time can vary quite a bit depending on the shipper, weather and number of stops. As a guide, it generally takes 5 to 15 days for East Coast to West Coast and 3 to 7 days to go North to South.
Purchasing Insurance - The shipper probably provides minimal insurance at no extra charge, but this may not be enough. Other insurance options should be available from the shipper as an extra expense that may give you more protection. Before selecting any insurance option, understand whether you will be reimbursed based on the extent of the damage. Check your homeowner's and auto insurance for any damage coverage.
Pick up and Delivery - Most transporters will try to pick up your vehicle at your front door if possible. However, some residential areas may be a problem for 8-10 car transporters. If this happens, they may ask for you to meet at a open parking lot or a terminal.
Bill of Lading - A Bill of Lading is a legal document issued by the carrier which confirms the receipt of a vehicle and specifies the terms and conditions of shipment. It must be signed by the client and the carrier at the time of pick up and delivery. Before signing, make sure you have inspected your vehicle and the document for accuracy. Any damages must be noted before and at the time of delivery.
Personal Belongings - Most carriers will allow you to pack up to 100 lbs in your trunk or backseat. Personal items packed in the vehicle are NOT covered by the carrier's insurance which is why it's a good idea to remove GPS systems, satellite radios, car phones and garage door openers.
